My First Steam Engine Project

5 08 2012

The question that I am asked the most is What set of Steam Engine Plans do you recommend for the first time or novice steam engine build project.

My first Steam Engine build was a “Wobbler” design which elimimatsd the need for any timing and valve gear and greatly simplifies the build.  In this type of Model Steam Engine, the cylinder moves with the action caused by the eccentric crank and at the end of each stroke, the cylinder ports coincide with the inlet and exhaust ports on the Frame.

The Steam Engine has a Double Acting Cylinder, this means that the piston is powered in both direction by the steam.

This project has very easy to follow plans that are available free of charge from

Many other free sets of plans are included on the Steam Engine Plans page, ranging from simple engines that are Ideal for the hobby engineer that is just starting, to some of the most challenging Steam Engine Builds that are available to date.
